Home Theater Concession Stand
If you are going all out with your design concept, you might as well incorporate a home theater concession stand within your plan. After all, your goal is to try and mimic the real experience as much as possible. So...what home theater would be complete without one?
Incorporating something like this into your theater can leave an indelible impression on your guests. It might even turn into some candy sales! Just don't charge your guests a fortune like the real movie theaters do. I'm just kidding, of course...
On a more serious note, concession stands provide you with an opportunity to showcase some items, as well. Not only can you place the more traditional things like candy in them, but you can also use this as a focal point for some of your movie memorabilia.
Home theater concession stands are available on the commercial market and are typically very expensive (in the $2000-$3,000 range). But they truly are the real thing. If you're like me, your goal is to try and achieve the same effect but not spend as much money. So I've got a couple of ideas for you.
I've seen some used jewelry display cases in the after-market that someone had obtained from a retail store. When I've stumbled across them, I've typically found them for sale in local antique malls. I've been able to purchase one of these for as little as $100, very similar to those pictured below. The main things to consider is the internal lighting mechanism and the condition of the glass. Wood (or wood overlay) on the unit can be refurbished (i.e., replaced or simply painted) fairly inexpensively.
It also wouldn't be a bad idea to stop by and talk to a retail store manager to see if they have any units they're going to liquidate or even throw away. You'd be amazed at the stuff a retailer will throw away just because of it's convenience. Also keep an eye out for any retailers that are going out of business in your area.
Lastly, be sure to check out ebay. This is the search criteria that I use to search for these units on their site.
Now all you have to do is go out and find one! And don't forget the snacks!
