Home Theater Design e-Guide:
Home Theater Contractor Installation

Let's face it. Your inner circle of family and friends just don't see you as a "handyman" -- and neither do you. If that's the case, then a home theater contractor installation is the professional touch you need to follow through on your HT design concept.

Assessing Your Skills

It's important to be honest with yourself and accurately assess your skills, aptitude, and learning wants and needs. It's really just a matter of identifying what you feel that you can reasonably take on yourself and what you can't. For some of us, we want to gain some exposure and experience with certain things, so see if the professional you select for your project is willing to partner with you on your home theater contractor installation. Sometimes, they might even be willing to reduce your costs from the "sweat labor" you contribute.

Time is also an important factor to consider as you make your assessment. If you won't have the time to devote to learning something new, you probably shouldn't go down that path unless the length of the project is of no concern to you.

Finding the Right Home Theater Professional for You

A solid research plan is extremely critical to identifying the right person to do the job. Since you're making a significant investment into your home theater project, choosing the wrong person can result in a costly mistake. Take your time and use our tips to help guide you through the process of choosing the right professional that suits your style and budget for your home theater contractor installation.

How client-focused are they? Are they attentive to your needs? Do they respond in a timely fashion to your requests? How committed do you perceive them to be to your project? Chances are, your intuition about these things will become a reality. No matter how well they score on other things in your assessment, problems surfaced here will ultimately show in their work.

Ask for references. It's always nice to know if someone has other professionals who will back their work or even clients who will provide testimonials. Be sure to closely examine the credibility of the references, though.

Ask to see examples of their work. At a minimum, someone who takes pride in their work will have plenty of pictures to show prospective clients. Even better, some may be offer to connect you with a past client to see the work in person.

Ensure they are bonded and insured. It's a rather risky proposition to work with someone who isn't, especially as litigenous as society is these days. Get this out of the way up front in the consultation process.

Request written estimates. It never hurts to get things in writing. For larger, more complex projects, have the contractor break things down into logical pieces. For comparative purposes, it's nice to understand the material and labor costs going into each facet of the project. You may decide to subcontract each phase of the project to specialists versus choosing a full-service general contractor.
